He wins by putting the bat on the ball. He misses on just 10.1% of his swings, far below the qualified average. He does not get there by swinging at everything. He swings at strikes much less often than most hitters, a patient approach that leaves hittable pitches untouched. When he does connect, there is little exit velocity behind it. His top-end exit velocity has been well below average in all three seasons, so his contact carries almost no power.

His launch takes away most of what is left. His median launch angle is 7.5 degrees, well below the qualified average, so much of his contact goes into the ground. His launch angle also varies more than most hitters' do, which means more topped balls and popups and fewer balls squared up. Contact that soft and that low should produce few hits. His xBA (house model), the batting average his contact should produce, is .238. That is below average despite all the strikeouts he avoids.
